It is time for our first Kid-Free Adventure in quite some time!  On Memorial Day Weekend, we celebrate our wedding anniversary, and it is the perfect time to get away for an extended four-day weekend.  Since four days is still a shorter trip, we try to plan a trip that is within a few hours driving from our home.  In 2021, we decided to check out Door County for the first time.  We had always heard people rave about how great it was.  Especially the hiking, the wineries and breweries, the sites to see and the foods to try. It sounded like our kind of destination, so we eagerly began doing some research.

Now, we both initially thought that Door County was a town north of Green Bay, but as we began to look into our trip, to our surprise, it was an actual county in Wisconsin.  I know, call us crazy, but we grew up thinking this!

Initially, we felt a little overwhelmed with trying to pick a town to stay in.  Ephraim, Sister Bay, Fish Creek, Sturgeon Bay, Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor – they all seemed to have a distinct, unique charm to them.  Steven ended up reaching out to a former teacher that he knew had taken several trips to Door County.  She gave us some input about the different towns, and we settled on staying in Sister Bay.

After selecting a town, it came down to booking a place to stay.  Sister Bay offers numerous options for accommodations.  We were looking for something that was affordable and within walking distance to the main downtown area of Sister Bay.  As we have said, while on vacation we love to eat, shop, and being close to the water is a bonus.  There were several options to stay that seemed to be in walking distance to the downtown area.

Upon completing our research, we ended up booking a stay at the Birchwood Lodge in their Grand One Bedroom Suite.  The room was cozy. It had a kitchen, outdoor patio, living room area separate from the bedroom, and a bedroom with a jacuzzi tub, and the location was perfect!  We were able to walk downtown each morning for a coffee and a stroll along the bay.  There were also several stores to shop at and several restaurants to enjoy, all within walking distance.  After our stay in 2021, we were not disappointed. It was a perfect weekend getaway, and we always felt like there was something to do, and felt like there was still plenty more to see and enjoy. So, we began planning for our trip in 2022.

We don’t think you could go wrong with staying in any of the towns in Door County, but after driving through most of the popular towns and destinations, we think we made the right decision for what we are looking for in a weekend away.

We look forward to sharing our experiences with you about our 2022 Trip to Door County.  For additional options for accommodations, follow this link.
